    Hiya, I just wanted to know how the horse that was found in Malaga is? I cannot believe anyone could leave their horse to get to that state, why not give it away if you cannot look after it, honestly I was just so so sad to read that article and see the picture. Especially as since around age 4 ive wanted my own horse! I am now 30 and am looking for one to buy :o)

    The horse has only one eye ,the other one is rotting away with hundreds of flies on it,so I put a bandage one it,gave it water and food.It has numerous wounds also.

    It was totally tied up around a tree and harly move,I found it peculier after two days that it was still on the same place

    I would just like to say what a wonderful group you are, I myself used to help and take in ill treated horses so I know the work involved, thats why I think what I am about to ask is a bit cheeky as I know how busy you are. I am moving to Casarabonel next year and want to have horses as the climate etc is different I would like to do some homework do you know of any good publications or books which can tell me how to care for a horse in spain as Im sure it will totally different to Scotland in the UK very cold. ie is is true it is best to hose a horse down just before the midday sun comes out or are they better stabled when it is really hot.. I thank you for your time and help you can give me on this as I really dont want to have any sick horses there is already to many of them. Next time I am in Spain I will also like to come and see your centre

    I am an English woman who has lived in Spain for 5 years. Before I came here I was the proud foster mother of a beautiful black New Forest/Arab who rescued from the meat market by the association I belonged to. When I first aquired him he was only 12 weeks old and I paid £16 to save him from certain death. I spent every spare moment I had with him and he became the most sweet natured gentle animal I have known. Altough he was fostered from the charity, all his needs were my responsibilty, day to day care, feeding, exercise, insurance, vets fees etc. He and I had the time of our lives while we were together and when I moved to Spain I reluctantly passed him on to a friend of mine who still has him and he is a very happy 9 year old, living with two other ponies and a little grey donkey. He competes in local copetitions and always wins 1st for Best Turned Out. I would like to know whether I could be considered to foster or adopt a foal from your charity and have the opportunity to repeat the experience I so enjoyed in England. I live in the country and have 7,500 sq mtrs of land. I have 2 dogs, one Wiemeraner and one Great Dane, and one persian cat and a husband who is always willing to help.     i was wondering what help i may be able to offer. i have been in spain for 5ys now and since coming have myself brought quite a few poorly starved horses and got them back to health. having had my own yard in the uk and also been an emergency stable site for the police i have vast experience in the care and welfare of equines ( infact in my village i have shown spaniards how tograze with electric fencing rather than tethering horses or hobbling them). i would be open to be an emergency take in point for horses in my area if needs be (axarquia) or some other form of help.

    i would like to find out how to stop a so called riding school,this is not a fed or bhs yard, and there has been many health and saftey issues not alone horse deaths due to colic and dhydration. lessons to public with faulty equipment and horses that need to be rested and not tied up all day in stalls, around 3000m including house and stables and stalls and last count over 50 horses,

    Is there not any laws that come into force that affect E U Countries then, or practice codes of conduct that any riding establishment should follow, as when opening a Centre Equestre there is many formalities and a vet has to examine the yard and horses, to grant any opening licence and how close you are to Urbanisations and the impact of the area. I find it very hard that horses are kept in this terrible conditions and in such small spaces, many have back and leg complaints and only two days ago I hear of another Colic case which was saved this time, but so far 4 have died in less than a year.Many are too old to still be working. Thrush is in many of the feet of many of them as they are standing is wet bedding that has been made of mouldy straw. Some horses are doubled up in stables of around 4×4 stalls including the heavier breed of horse,normally found in Holland, faulty electric fencing as mares and stallions are all too close.
    Most of the colic issues have all been dehydrated as there is no water by automatic waters, just the odd bucket given, and the ones that do have automatic water still are suffering from no work as some do not get let out at all . This is a very sorryfull site. please advise me on someone I can call to try and sort this problem. I cannot see any website for Soprona.

    Please can you tell me if you are involved in monitoring the welfare of the horses that pull the carriages of tourists along the coast of Costa del Sol. A while ago I stayed in Fuengirola and was shocked at the condition of some of these horses. They were left to stand out in very hot temperatures in the full sun while their owners stood in the shade. They did not have regular water to drink. Some of them had very ill fitting tack which left sores on their heads and body. I pointed this out to one owner and he just laughed.
    I felt so concerned about the plight of these horses that I wrote to the local authority who I thought must licence them in some way. But I got no reply.
    I would be grateful if you could let me know if things have improved and that someone cares for these horses.

    There has been a pony aboandoned in the fields behind URB El Soto De La Quinta, it has been tied to a tree with rope arund its neck, it has no food or water, and it looks like it has been there a while..

    I would really appreciate it if you could please check this out as it looks very distressed and weak… I have tried to feed it carrots but will not take any food..

    Hope you can help - I have owned and rescued horses in spain for 8 years, and now have a herd of 16. I usually worm them twice a year (they live out with shelter but are not grazing) with the most expensive wormer, believing that you get what you pay for. After trying to research the ins and outs of different wormers, I am left very confused. My horses are due to be wormed and I just cant decide which wormer to use. I can get no information for horses in spain, all the websites relate to horses kept in england.

It has water and is completely fenced and turfed. The owners would happily make it available to you for keeping Donkeys.     Me pongo en contacto con ustedes ya que me siento en la obligación de hacer una denuncia del mal estado de los animales en una hipica en teruel.
    Soy un amante de los animales y sobre todo de los caballos y no soporto ver el estado en el que se encuentran enjaulados los animales, el estado de las cuadras es pesimo, el espacio es tal reducido que no pueden casi darse la vuelta, las instalaciones son antihigienicas para los animales y las personas, bueno es tal que no encuentro palabras para describirlo, siendo testigo de lo mismo.
    Por ello hago referencia y me siento obligado a presentar una denuncia ante vosotros al Sr. Antonio Civera Proto encargado de las instalaciones, Hipica Valdelobos de Teruel.

    I am in the cartama campo area and have 2 mares and one shetland, five days ago a pony turned up outside my gate unfortunatly the poor thing is missing a hoof! It is also very underweight ,I have brought it inside my field and know it is a mare but other than that no one knows or cares who this poor animal belongs to what do I do?     El Ayuntamiento socialista de Mijas permite que los caballos del hipódromo mueran de hambre
    14.03.08 | 09:30. Archivado en Análisis

    (PD).- Lo que está pasado en el hipódromo de Mijas tiene nombre: maltrato animal. Un caballo ha muerto de hambre y otros siete llevan el mismo camino. En la propia denuncia de un jockey se afirma que “esta situación de dejadez se viene produciendo desde hace dos años”. Las instalaciones son propiedad de Recursos Turísticos de Mijas, cuyo accionista mayoritario es el propio Ayuntamiento de este municipio malagueño, gobernado por el PSOE.

    Un caballo ha muerto de hambre en las cuadras del hipódromo de la Costa del Sol de Mijas y otros siete corren peligro de muerte por inanición en estas mismas instalaciones, según se hace constar en la denuncia de infracción penal cursada por un jockey ante la Guardia Civil, en la que se afirma que esta situación de dejadez “se viene produciendo desde hace dos años” en unas instalaciones propiedad de una empresa, Recursos Turísticos de Mijas, cuyo accionista mayoritario es el propio Ayuntamiento de este municipio malagueño.

    Según esta información, desvelada por EL OBSERVADOR, eL caballo que murió de hambre el pasado febrero en el hipódromo de la Costa del Sol, de nombre Pisolino, era propiedad del conocido empresario, también fallecido, Enrique Sarasola, quien en su día presidió el hipódromo de Madrid.

    Tras la muerte del animal, otros dos corceles de Sarasola han sido evacuados del recinto, uno de ellos “prácticamente muerto” hasta el punto que tuvo que ser asistido para subir al camión de traslado, según se afirma en un atestado de denuncia de infracción penal presentado ante la compañía de la Guardia Civil en Benalmádena, por uno de los jockeys de dicho hipódromo.

    En este documento se alerta de que la situación de dejadez en la que se encuentran los animales “se viene produciendo desde hace dos años” hasta el extremo de que “hay dos caballos a punto de morir, desconociéndose en este momento el nombre y el propietario de los mismos y también hay entre tres y cinco caballos, propiedad de Julio César Martínez en una de las cuadras del hipódromo que están casi muertos”.

    El hipódromo Costa del Sol de Mijas es propiedad de una empresa, Recursos Turísticos Mijas, cuyo accionista mayoritario es el propio consistorio costasoleño. El hipódromo está gestionado por la empresa ‘Carrera Entertainment’, que es la concesionaria de la explotación por un periodo de 50 años.

    I have just returned from Spain. I was there for the week commencing 10th March 08. I return every year to see friends. This year, although its early and not yet Summer the donkeys in Mijas there - tied up with no water, surrounded by their own faeces. 2 of them were lame - and could not put any weight on one leg. The ones on view to the tourists - for rides, had no water, neither did the donkeys tied up down one level. They were tired, ill and extremely uncomfortable. There was some stupid tourists in a carriage being pulled by a donkey that was clearly in pain with its leg. I am disgusted. The last 4 years I have been - and seen during and at the end of summer - the intolerable pain, fatigue and thirst these poor creatures must endure. The spanish men who sit next to them have no interest in them at all, there is NO water around- there never is. There were also carriages being pulled by horses - the horses also had no water. Nothing has changed in the last 5 years for these poor creatures. The same donkeys are there still with no water after 5 years. Can nothing be done ? They are in agony. I note the Mayor said this (not sure when)…..”he would …According to the Town Hall, the agreement, signed by Mayor Agustín Moreno and El Refugio President José María Rodríguez, expresses the municipality’s commitment to regulating the ‘burro taxi’ service and ensuring the proper treatment of the animals, including appropriate hygiene, working conditions and general care”

    Well, this has NOT HAPPENED. Nothing has changed this year, or the last 5 years.

    I am hard working expecially when the rewards of helping animals are so great hence I am willing to perform any horse related tasks and work reasonable hours.

    Having read your website and all the help you offer to horses in distress and abandoned, I am somewhat at a loss to understand why you are not prepared to help with a distressed pony which was found wandering on the Campo just north of Cartama. From what I have been told, Miss Emma Tremayne contacted yourselves on this matter and you said you could not help.
    She had temporarily put this pony on my land while trying to find the owner, and has been kindly giving her food and water. This pony is walking on 3 legs, one back leg being totally useless due to a lack of hoof. The blacksmith has had a good look at her and said it looks like an accident and the hoof will not grow again. His opinion was that she should be humanely put to sleep. She struggles to gert around on her 3 legs and is obviously not happy and no longer able to do “horsey things”.
    I suspect this animal has just been dumped.
    We need the land for our own animals and feel that we have done our best to help her. Perhaps you would have taken more notice of this pony’s plight if we had just allowed her to keep wandering without food and water!!
    perhaps you could explain why you feel you cannot offer help.
    She has been here for 3 months like this now and it can’t go on indefinitely.

(Suele haber con frecuencia una furgoneta pequeña renault blanca cuya matrícula es: 4863BLG).
    Bueno, espero que se pueda hacer algo al respecto.

    Hello,
    In the stables I go in Torrevieja one of the horses, who is aged 12/13 has been diagnosed with chronic laminitis and ringbone. At the moment he isn’t badly lame but the vet has told the owner to destroy the horse having seen it’s x-rays. The horse is beautiful and has a great character, and as yet walks about and does not show that he is in agony. Obviously if he was in total agony, yes the only humane course would be to destroy him. I am just wondering if you can suggest any sanctuary where he could pass his remaining days in peace or whether here in Spain the only option for a horse that will have to retire from hard riding is destruction which for me appears a little harsh. I also wish I had could do something for him myself but I am unable to, hence I am asking for any advice and help. Thank you.

    I recently stayed at my friends family in Cartama. Behind the property was a field with 6 horses of various size and ages. The field they were in possibly an acre ish had no grass only what appeared to be stubble of straw however there was so much manure in the field the horses had very little to eat. The only shade they had was a couple of trees which by mid afternoon gave no shade whatsoever.
    The horses were very thin and one-a grey had large sores on its hind quarters. Some of the horses had halters on with long rope attached which they often tripped over.
    The most distressing thing was that 2 of the horses had there front feet tied together by rope-a term I believe is called hobbling. Why would they do this?
    A couple of times 2 horses escaped and though it upset me to put them back I did as we were near a main road. The fence and gate were dangerously made of loose wire and rope.
    They also went without water for at least 2 days though I did manage to take some buckets up to them. On the last night we found when coming back from a day out that someone had at last filled the bath and there was a tankof water there, I dont know if someone had seen me with the buckets and told the owners.
    As a massive horse lover it really upset me to see these horses in this state and sadly I cant give very good directions as it is in a strange area though I could maybe get the address of where I stayed if that helped.
    I can also send a picture of one of the horses if you want.
    Could you let me know what I can do to help you from here in the uk as I can see that this is far from an isolated case. I saw an ad in the local paper asking for volunteers at your establishment but sadly this was on the last day or I would of spent my week with you!

Dont get me wrong im no monty roberts but i enjoy there company and they have always seemed to like me and now i feel its time i had a horse for myself, i have 17,000sq metres of land and my best mate is moving to the house behind me in the second week in sept and the house has 4 stables and 8 paddocks and she has 4 horses and so i could keep a horse at home or in company at my friends place all i know is that i could give a horse a good home and alot of love so if you do have any horses of about 15,3h or more that are rideable i would love to offer he or she a good home.

    TRISTE CUENTO DEL CABALLO QUE QUISO SER MILITAR

    Érase una vez la historia de Joker Du Plape, un caballo angloárabe de apenas diez años que a pesar de su apetito no conseguía ganar peso pero con unos ojos llenos de cariño, fuerza y vida aunque últimamente con una mirada triste y vacía que busca consuelo, mimos y un reclamo de auxilio pues olfatea cuál va a ser su final.
    Su desgracia no ha sido otra que acabar en el Depósito de Sementales de Zaragoza esperándo que se realizase una subasta pública para que alguien se apiadara de él y le diera una nueva oportunidad para pacer en algún verde prado.
    Pero Joker no corrió la suerte de otros caballos que si fueron comprados. Nadie pujó por él.
    Como comenzó a ser un estorbo en el Depósito, pues consideraban que el caballo no podía ganarse su manutención (pienso, alfalfa) y su cama (cuadra con viruta limpia), el pasado viernes se dió la terrible orden: Joker recibiría la inyección que acabaría con su relincho este mismo lunes, 1 de septiembre.
    Un triste final para un animal que no puede participar en concursos de salto por su estado físico, que no puede ser semental porque su esperma no servía para ello (practicándole así la castración); en definitiva, un caballo que solo puede dar amor y afecto a quien lo cuide! Y por lo visto eso no significa nada para el séquito caqui del Depósito.
    El momento trágico de la historia viene cuando fuera de subasta aparecen hasta tres personas interesándose por el triste final del equino.
    Pero como es más sencillo aplicar una inyección letal sin que nadie se entere que tener que realizar un informe con explicaciones que llegue a manos del Generalísimo para pedir por su indulto, el caballo desaparecerá de nuestras conciencias sin que nadie pueda evitarlo.
    Y colorín colorado esta barbarie ha terminado.

There must be loads of yeguadas who could take the one of horses on for a while until they are rehomed. I could manage one for a bit, I have 2 here on my mini finca in chiclana.     I live opposite a paddock which contains a largish number of horses, foals and the odd donkey. Probably around twenty-five or thirty animals in all

    One of the horses has a bell hung round the top of it´s neck which clangs incessantly day and night. Also I imagine that every time the horse lowers it´s head to feed or brows the bell bangs against it´s lower jaw.

    My enquiry of you is whether this is cruelty to the horse, and if it is, what is to be done about it. If it isn´t cruel, what is the purpose of hanging the bell so that it clangs constantly. It annoys me so I would imagine it will annoy the horse.

    I know nothing about horses so advice on this issue would be appreciated.

     I just returned from a holiday in spain - la manga in the murcia region. I have ridden all my life and went to visit the local stables inversiones hipicas, centro hipico el puntal, finca el puntal, los belones, 30385, cartagena. On the visit everything seemed fine the lovely spanish horses had big clean beds and looked well cared for so I booked a ride with a friend for the next day.

     The horses were saddled when we arrived, none of these three were ones that I remembered from seeing in the stables the day before. Mine had a standing matringale on which I thought was quite harsh when I got on her and she threw her head around loads and the main guide juan said that was why it was on. We were three people/horses on the hack, in the evening, it wasnt very hot and we only walked but after about 15 mins it became apparent that his horse - a 16hh chestnut arab type mare wasnt very happy, she was coming out in a white foam sweat (the other two were fine) and was very shaky in her back end/legs - and puffing we walked more and by the end of the ride she was totally drenched and to be honest looked like she could fall over at any minute but Juan did not dismount and lead her. I got out of him that she was 15 and 4 months pregnant.. I think he was worried about her as he kept asking me if she looked lame. When we got back to the stables, being a horse person I started to untack my horse and take it to be hosed off.. thats when I noticed that she - a 15hh bay mare had a big saddle sore that had obviously been there for some time and been re-opened repeatedly.. then I looked over at his horse and she had about 5/6 on her back all red and open sores - I pointed this out to him and showed him as best I could that it was unacceptable but I dont speak spanish nor he english. The third horse that I also hosed again had open sores on his back - a 15hh grey (white) gelding.

     PLEASE could someone check it out. Or tell me who else to contact about it. I intend to get a friend to translate an email to the stables and write letters to the hoilday company to dissaude tourists from going to the stables - what else can I do? It is neglect and cruely and I expect most people dont see these awful sores all over their backs because they dont untack them. The horses at the public face look fine and I expect lots are livery - but please please look harder, these poor horses should not suffer in the back.

     Hi there
     I am interested in homing a horse preferably male (Stallion or Gelding) it must be 16hands + and able to carry 13 stone so my husband can also ride.
     We are very experienced horse people and keep our 3 horses (2 arabians and a hanoverian x ), which we brought with us from England 3 years ago, at home.
     We have our own stable yard with all year round turn out and both an indoor and outdoor pista.
     Financially we dont have the money to buy another horse, we have just resurfaced our outdoor pista which cost a fortune, but we have marvellous facilities and could offer a horse a lovely permenant knowledgeable home.
     We are happy to take on something requiring either breaking or reschooling and are able to deal with horses with either psychological issues or temperament problems.
     I am an ex amateur jockey and grade 2 eventer and now compete my Arabians in Raid/endurance riding. My husband competed and hunted in the uk . We have both broken, schooled and competed Arabians and Thoroughbreds and warm bloods in the UK.
     Could you please advise if you have anything suitable and also what sort of payment you required to adopt/foster a Sepe horse

     Saludos y felicidades por el trabajo que están llevando a cabo en pro de equinos necesitados.
     Les escribimos del Departmento de Ciencias Agrarias de la Universidad de Ciencias Comerciales en Managua, Nicaragua, uno de los países más pobres de Centroamérica.
     En Nicaragua se usan muchos equinos como carretoneros. Estos animales, en su mayoría, son esqueletos andantes, con lesiones en la espalda y parte trasera de las piernas, requera crónica por la práctica de ponerles uno o dos herraduras pero casi nunca las cuatro, que sufren de desnutrición, deshidratación y parásitos.
     En nuestro esfuerzo por ayudar a estos nobles animales, hemos iniciado varios proyectos con la generosa ayuda de organizaciones como WSPA, ILPH y RSPCA, pero todo esfuerzo hasta ahora es poco.
     Nos gustaría saber si la Sociedad Española para la Protección de Equinos nos podría ayudar en algo, con donaciones en especie de medicamentos, equipos usados, capacitación, etc. Apreciamos cualquier ayuda que nos llegue!

     Hi We were wondering if you might be able to help or advise what we can do to help a horse that is on a piece of waste ground in front of our villa. The horse is slowly dying in front of us and we not know who we can contact or if there is anyone we can contact to help this sad animal. The horse has no direct access to water or food except what it can rummage from the baron ground or what we take it. There was also a foal with near it that has now disappeared probably sold. Its hoofs have not seen any surface that helps wear them down and as a result they are now starting to grow back on themselves which in turn prevents the horse from walking. We never see anyone attending the horse so cant establish who it belongs to. We also have noticed the red raw sores on the hind quarters presumably where it lays down but struggles to get up again because of the hoofs.

     Basically if something is not done soon I fear that this horse will not last the winter

     I have contacted my local vet who informed me that there is nothing that can be done as there are no associations to help these or any other animals in this area. I was wondering if I should inform the animal welfare of the Guardia Civil would help but have been informed that they are attend to wild animals only

     Hope you can help or advise.

There is a seriously malnourished mare at the back of the COSAPA furniture factory on the Marbella coin road - you get to it by going to the gasolinera and tracking back towards Coin on the old road ( happy to come and show you ) She is tied, cant reach her water and occasionally someone throws some straw to her. I am going daily with alfalfa and trying to keep her going.      I heard news last night that a very well respected stud is in severe difficulties due to ill-health and the current economic climate. A friend of a friend has been out at the stud working there for 3 months to try and ease the burden and hardship. Unfortunately the horses are now in a state of difficulty and there now needs to be some co-ordinated intervention fairly urgently.

     I am sure that is now, sadly, a common situation which will only get worse as the globabl economy spirals ever downwards.

     Good Morning I hope you can help We have a horse in the arroyo in front of our house It has no access to water or food and is slowly starving to death The pictures of your other horses look positively fat compared to this poor animal It is unable to walk as the hoofs are bent over through lack of use and the sores on the hind quarters are horrible, I have been to the Guardia Civil Soporo and will go again today but they probably have more to worry about than this horse. I have never seen the owner of the horse otherwise I would ask him what he thinks he is doing starving an animal to death like this. If I had the means I would take the horse but unfortunately I don’t. Can you help I don’t know what else to do for this poor animal

     tengo un caso de abandono en una finca privada, son una yegua su potra de un año y caballo castrado y una poni preñada y su cria del año anterior. No tienen pasto alguno ya que comparten el prado cn unas 15 ovejas. cuando descubrimos a la yegua estaba delgadisima y muy mal. lleban sin desparasitarse mas de un año, y no se han vacunado. me gustaria saber que puedo hacer porque la yegua morira. esta peor que la que teniais vosotros (rosita, la palomina que no resistio) porque estan en cantabria y las heladas son enormes en estas epocas. hace una semana viendo el estado llamaron al dueño y trajo unas bolas de hierba, pero esta negra y podrida y aun asi los animales se las comen. informenme sobre todo lo que pudiera hacer tanto yo como ustedes muchisimas gracias.

     I have a 16 yo stallion who has been diagnosed with navicular, arthritis in the neck as well as back and hindquarter problems. He is not in any pain mooching around in my paddock but, even with the specialist shoes and medication, I will not be able to ride him where I live as it is in the mountains and he needs flat surfaces. I have had him about three years and he is the kindest, most obedient, well schooled and gentlest stallion I have ever met and I have been in horses for about 60 years. I don’t want to have to put him down and wondered if you could possibly take him. I realise you are not a retirement home but you are my last hope. I would not consider selling him or loaning him privately as I have seen how the spanish keep their stallions. If nothing else I will have him put to sleep and would then be looking for a replacement that I can ride out in the campo and mountains every day. Nothing strenuous but as I am over 60 although an experienced rider I do not want anything mad! I worked for the International League for the Protection of Horses in Welfare in England for over 9 years before going on to another equine charity. I have had horses all my life and am a qualified side saddle instructor and judge and a dressage judge.

     Please can you help me with my horse?

     Hi, two years ago when I moved back to England I brought with me a horse I rescued. He was underweight had overgrown hooves, he was lame and uncomfortable, he had no forelock, mane or tail. He is now living an amazing life and is comfortable and loves to lightly hack out with his new friends. We think he is about 25.

     acabo de ver vuestra pagina navegando por internet y la verdad es que era desconocida para mi y creo que para mucha gente tambien yo soy de la zona de murcia y soy un amante de los animales especialmente de los caballos, llevo unos 4 años iniciado en la equitacion, he tenido dos caballos 4 años y ahora por descgracia los he tenido que llevar a una finca para que disfruten los dos del tiempo de vida que les queda ya que son algo mayores y con muchas dificultades y enfermedades pero ya por eso no dejan de ser mis niños y siguen su tratamiento y medicacion diaria aunque no los pueda utilizar para la monta.
     bueno no me enrrollo mas.
     decir que desde aqui yo hare lo posible por dar a conocer vuestro trabajo ya que en esta zona tambien hay mucha aficion por la equitacion.
     tambien decir que en el momento que me sea posible realizare un donativo mensual y si es posible como me gusta viajar mucho me gustaria saber con certeza donde os encontrais y no descarto visitaros.
     Seguid luchando en vuestra labor, labor que formara parte de mi tambien en dar a conocer todo lo que realizais.

Les agradeceria me indicaran si hay algun modo de proteger a un caballo blanco que tienen en una finca en la que hay mas caballos que duermen en su cuadra y concretamente a este lo tienen noche y dia a la intemperie llueva o haga sol con el riesgo añadido que puedan atentar contra su seguridad. Se que es asi porque paso cada dia a las 7 de la mañana y vuelvo a las 8,30 de la noche y esta todo cerrado. Lo vengo observando desde hace mas de 4 meses y no lo encierran nunca. Esta sucio dado que es blanco y no llego a comprender porque lo tienen en estas condiciones. Esta situado en un vial paralelo a la carretera C-31 que va desde la rotonda de la Cruz Roja de Calafell (Tarragona) a la entrada de la autopista C-32 a Barcelona. Gracias por su atencion. Antonia

     I live in Holland and last week I have been on holidays in Adalucia. We visited Guadix and I have seen the most thin horses i have even seen been before… I was shocked, I was angry…. I don’t know how I can do something for those horses?! I hope by informing you, maybe someone can go and take a look and do something.

     I will try to explane the situation and the location.
     It’s when you drive to the museum of the casa cueva. A little down hill (not so far away from the panoramic viewpoint for tourists ). (I THINK neerby the calle de la canada de los perales.) In the middle of all the houses (kind of a central place in the village) there is an a kind of round building with an open space in the midle. There are more than 10 horses on this place (maybe more in the “stables”). The place is full of waste, no watter, only dirt. And the horses are so skinny! They are week and some of them can hardly stand on there legs. They really look like they are dying! (I have seen many skinny horses on tv and papers of “Brooke hospital” but I have never seen them worse than this.) There was even one horse missing an eye!
     Around the open place are wals and buildings that must have been a stables. There are iron bars for the “windows” and you can also see the horses by the entry of the open place. Everybody can see these poor horses. I just can’t understand this situation beeing in such an touristic city and with so many feelds full of food for the horses around the city.

     Please go and help the horses or try to contact me if you can tell me what I can do or who I should contact for this (maybe I can sort out the exact location if you want to).

     “Last week I went to see some horses that a friend was interested in buying. Two mares with foals and a pony stallion (the father of the foals)
     We has been there for 5 minutes when a family of gypsies turned up and proceeded to buy we thought at the time the mares and both the foals.
     The mares were being trotted up close to the stallion who was tied up. The stallion got excited (understandably) so the owner proceeded to beat the shit out of the ponies protruding member with a stick. I asked him twice not to do it and just move the stallion. He just ignored me. My daughter was by this time in tears. The pony then just lay down in obvious pain.

     We then left as the deal had been done and there waas nothing more we could do.

     About half an hour later the gypsies turned up at my house asking if my horses were for sale. They were told in no uncertain terms that NO THEY WERE NOT.

     They also told me that they had infact only bought one of the mares and both the foals. The foal now without the mother was born on the 15th May!!!!

     After they had left I phoned the owner and said that I would buy the foal as long as she could stay with the mare until she was weaned. He agreed and said he would tell the gypsies and phone me the next day

     He didn’t phone so I phoned him. The gypsies had allegedly threatened him so he let them have both foals which have now been moved to god knows where.

     I now feel so guilty that I should have done more. God knows what will happen to the foal (if it even survives)”

     Hi,

     I have a friend who lives in Marchenilla (near Jimena De La Frontera). She has 2 horses and now a donkey that came to her. The donkey was pregnant and gave birth to the cutest little foal last full moon, a couple of days ago.

     My friend knows the owner and has asked to buy the donkey off him, she offered 300 euros but he want’s 1200, which she doens’t have.

     The owner has visited the donkey at her place, (it was just roaming around the road outside her house before she came in) with his friends, when she was pregnant a few months ago and they were running up to her and jumping on her, pulling her ears and generally bullying her, shouting look at what I can do to the donkey.. he and his friends are well over 6 foot and the donkey was petrified.

     She will happily keep the donkey, she has plenty of room and it is more settled now.. you can at least get near her with out her completely freezing and almost trying not to be seen.

     Is there anything she can do to stop him taking the donkey and foal away again. She is trying to keep them hidden from him for now as the donkey wasn’t due until the end of august but she thinks as soon as he knows the foal is there he’ll want to take her back.

     any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am helping physically and with some small donations of food etc but I also am not in a great financial place right now and have my own two horses and many other animals to think about. Whilst there I saw some horses (maybe three, difficult to see because of long grass) on a piece of land at the entrance to the Miramar Shopping Centre in Fuengirola, two of which may have been tethered and one of them looked thin.      Hello, I have just come back from Sa Coma, Majorca again. We have been there four times now and plan to go again next year. However, each year I am appalled at the horses by the beach that pull the gigs for tourists. These horses are worked from 8/30am to until midnight and beyond. I know they are owned by local gypsies and I don’t want to stop them earning a living but the horses should be worked in shifts so they have some rest time. I have to say, that this really upsets me (having been a horse owner, lost mine last year) and only want the horses to be fairly treated and make people aware of there plight. I would be grateful for a reply by email. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.

     We went out for a meal one night and attached to the prperty was a paddock with 3 Horses quite obvious they were starving. I could not find any numbers to ring someone to rescue them. I hsave arrived home very distressed and cannot understand the Spanish mentality towards animals.

The flies are inside the wound and every time she moves the leather rub on the deep wound. The saddlery is covered in blood. I want to send you the photo.      I used to live in Marbella for 8 yrs and since returning to the UK I have set up a livery yard, I don’t know if this could be any help but I have a friend that owns a horse sanctuary not far from my yard and after telling her about your organisation we thought that seeing as horses in need over here have a lot more support, funding and people trying to help them, we would like to offer SEPE any help we can. I, myself compete on two PRE’s I brought back here with me and absolutely love the breed. Barbara my friend has rescued many horses inc. 3 part breds and loves them equally as much. I train my horses with natural horsemanship and she does the same on the rehab side with the rescues. I am over in Spain every few months to see my family and friends and have a good relationship with John Parker Int. so were quite used to importing regularly. After talking to many local horsey people we already seem to have a few families wanting to help that could offer wonderful homes for them.

     Really not sure if this helps in any way but please let us know if we can. We’d love to hear from you.

They are on the river bank behind the mini golf and the wok buffet in fuengirola by the Miramar shopping center. 1 is a grey tied up and it is staving there is no food or water for it and it is in a very bad condition the other is a chestnut I think the grey is possibly its mother as it is not tied up this one is it very very bad way. They are both very badly emaciated. I can take you to see them if you need me too.
     I didn’t know what else to do so please can you find them some help.

     My name is Isabel and my mother lives on the top of “Golf Rio Real”, 3 friendly horses belonging to a Spanish man used to roam around the area and we and another lady would feed them, but after complains from community the owner of horses has put them in a tiny fold further up near the little bridge crossing the toll road, just behind a huge yellow sign. They have been there now nearly 2 weeks. We went there Thursday and they were hungry and thirsty and lost a lot of weight. One of them a young stallion (he was always nervous) was tied with a rope around his neck to the sign, so he couldn’t eat or drink we managed to untie him and feed them a bit, but as animal lovers we are very concerned about the horses, they were beautiful horses and the mother and foals were always very friendly and I managed to feed the stallion too and gain a bit of confidence from he.

     I hope you will be able to go and perhaps rescue them, to get there it is all the way up towards “Balcon del Golf” and by the rubbish and water reserve there is a gate than can be opened to get there by car and the horses are behind the big yellow sign in a fenced area about 4×4 m for 3 large horses.

     I am sending out a plea of help for an abandoned horse on the river bed near Velez Malaga. The poor animal is very sick and noboday seems to want to help it. Two seperate animal charities near to where we live do not seem prepared to help. I have phoned sopresa and they appear to have done nothing. My friend and i are going to the ayuntamiento with photographs on Monday to see if they will do anything to help this poor creature.      My husband and I have just rescued a mare and a pony from land behind Mercadona (near the Pol. Indust.) in La Linea. We had to pay the ´dealer´ to be able to take them away so if they do die they will spend their last days in decent conditions. The mare is off the Henneke scale she is so thin and has slight rotation in her front hooves. The pony has a little weight on him but full founder in all four feet. The coffin bones have penetrated the soles. The mare can´t stand more than a couple of hours a day. We discover from the OCA in Algeciras that the dealer Sebastian Bernal Gonzalez has been denounced many times and has sanctions against him. But they still allow him to buy and sell horses! The person who can make the decision to not allow him to have any more animals is the delegado de agricultura in Cádiz Juan Antonio Blanco. I am reliably informed he sees it as bad politics to prohibit this man, and presumably others like him, from keeping animals! Do you have the weight/contacts to do anything about this? I am also informed that La Linea, like many town halls, do not have a finca/sanctuary in order to be able to remove the horses from this man or anyone and place them in for their recovery. This is against the law. Every town hall should have these facilities according to Spanish law. (if I´m teaching your granny to suck eggs here I do apologise). Please contact me regarding this situation. We are also looking for donations for medication, supplements, rugs, feed, bedding etc for these two poor equines. I am an equine podologist so am covering all their hoof care and rehabilitation. Two friends have donated rugs. Primero Equine have donated two sacks of their fantastic holistic feed for when we can get them back onto hard feed. We need tonnes of vet wrap and duck tape as well!

     I’m very worried about aprox. 20-30 horses standing on a field on the right side at the Cerros Carretera de Aguila, about 5 minutes drive from the cemetary.
     These horses are in very bad conditioned and are all very malnutrioned, their bones are sticking all out and sometimes they escape their field and walking on the road, looking for something to eat. We have a house over there, and with all the rain wich have been falling, the horses had no shelter, no food etc, It broke my heart but I had no idea how I could help.      Estimado(a) sr(a),

     Seguramente reciben ustedes con frecuencia un numero de correspondencia requiriendo su ayuda para diversos animales, de cualquier modo me permito atraves de este medio, solicitar su apoyo para el bienestar de unos potrillos.

     Atraves de el site “bokt.nl”, he conocido a una señora originaria de Belgica, quien reside en España (Jijona, Alicante). Un dia en que ella fue al campo a mirar a un caballo negro, vio en una parcela vecina algunos potrillos que se encontraban en un estado deprorable. Uno de ellos ya habia perdido el sentido de la vista y algun otro ha crecido cascos deformados.

     Apesar de que ella tenia la salud fragil ( espalda fracturada), decidio rescatar a estos potrillos. Utilizo todos sus ahorros para comprarlos y actualmente se encuentran con ella disfrutando de una mejor calidad de vida. Recien llegaron, estaban los potrillos muy debiles, raquiticos y con un vientre inflado debido a que estaban llenos de lombrices. Es muy triste que la gente descuide de esta manera a estos animales tan bellos. Afortunadamente para los potrillos, ella cuida de ellos con todo su corazon y mucho cariño. Hasta el momento esto ha sido posible sin el apoyo de ninguna instancia, pero sin abscencia de dificultades economicas. La principal preocupacion en este momento, es que en caso de imprevistos (tormentas, inundaciones, etc.) que puedan afectar directamente el bienestar de los potrillos, no cuenta ella con los medio para hacer frente a este tipo de imprevistos.

     He estado siguiendo esta historia por algun tiempo y me gustaria ayudar contactando alguna instancia protectora de animales en España que pudiera proporcionar ayuda economica y medicinas para los potrillos. La intencion es que estos permanecan con su ama, pues estan en buenas manos, tienen una vida estable, reciben suficiente cariño y cuidado. Ademas estos han sufrido suficiente como para considerar alguna alteracion en su actual ritmo y calidad de vida.

How I wish that you had been able to help Zenete, a beautiful grey stallion, who was owned by an ignorant owner .. and died of Colic/Abandonment .. it is so sad that so many animals are treated badly here in Spain.
     Where are you based ? I live far away in the Province of Teruel … it isn’t Horse Country, there is no Tradition of Riding Horses here, sadly.

     Hi,

     My name is Dorne, I live near Ronda with my spanish partner Paco, 3 children, 6 horses, 1 donkey and 6 dogs. We used to live in Orgiva (hence the collection of beasts) and 8 years ago I bought Al the donkey for 25 euros from the gypsies because they were about to trim his hooves with an axe. They had already done this to another who was standing in a pool of blood.
     Back then he had very few teeth but managed to eat most things and maintain his weight. I wouldn’t know how old he is but my guess is well over 30 and it now looks like he is officially toothless. Now I mix bran and cooked abbas together because the pienso just falls out of his mouth along with the grass and hay balls, he is starting to look very frail. I found several website pages on rescue homes where toothless donkies and horses were fed and thriving on a product called one n only it dissolves in the mouth, sounds perfect but it’s american and the chances of getting hold of it in Andalucia is very slim so I was hoping you may have some ideas as to what I can give him? He loves the bran and cooked abbas but not so sure it’s doing him any good, although since I started cooking the beans he hasn’t put on weight but certainly has more energy but my daughters are complaining about how frequently he breaks wind!

     Any advice at all would be very appreciated.

     I need some help.
     I really need to get some assistance to two or three horses on the A362 road to Los Palacios. I have been researching and trying for some time and at last I have been given a couple of web sites.
     I work with a dog shelter here in Moron de la Frontera and I run a program for cats but I have no way of helping these poor horses who are really in a desperate state. I am sure that the police here will be off no help whatsoever.
     I have been in Spain for almost 2.5 years (due to leave in September) and we live in a rented house so I have nowhere to put these horses even if I had transport to go kidnap them !!!!
     Quite frankly I just dont know what to do !!!!

     I posted on your site for some help with a couple of horses and I do so hope we can help them but while I had your site up I read thru all the postings and I have to say it has left me very depressed. I have been working here in the Sevilla environs for almost 2.5 years with dogs and cats. The cruelty and neglect in this area is almost unimaginable. This IS Europe isnt it ????? I sometimes find it hard to accept that. What are we doing or not doing is the better question. Spain is one of the original 6 members of the EU isnt it ???? Spain has received massive subsidies from the EU hasnt it ????? Spain has benefited a lot from the EU hasnt it ? Time the EU did something I think Tradition as an excuse is not acceptable. A country should be judged by how it treats the vulnerable and those that serve us well. I spent 10 years in the middle east so you would think nothing would shock me - what a surprise I had when I came here !!!!!!

     I for one will be very very glad when my time is done and I can leave. Every single day I see some something that keeps me awake at night !!! When someone used to ask me where I was from I used to say “actually I am European” since living here I dont say that anymore.

Tengo un vecino que tiene caballos, tiene una cuadra en su casa, pero tambien se ha adueñado de una parcela vacia la cual no es suya y tiene siempre varios caballos alli, dia y noche, invierno y verano, haga sol, frio, lluvia… sin ningun tipo de sombra o refugio para los caballos. La verdad es que dan pena de verlos. Varios vecinos me preguntan si son mios los caballos porque estan justo a la espalda de mi casa y todos opinan que es penoso ver el estado en el que estan esos caballos.
     Me gustaria que me informarais si hubiese alguna forma de denunciarlo de forma anonima para no tener problemas ni enfrentamientos con ese vecino para asi darle una solucion y un mejor cuidado a esos caballos. Gracias y un saludo.

     Dear Sirs,

     I have recently come back from a holiday in Mijas in Spain. Horses and donkeys are used to pull coaches/carriages for tourists as a way of making money for the owners. Although the animals I saw looked well cared for I did not like the way the donkeys were tethered against a wall waiting to be taken up to the upper level to work. Each evening the donkeys and horses are taken off somewhere and I wondered where this might be. ((I noted too that whilst I could hear some of the donkey braying the horses were very quiet (had their vocal cords been cut)). Do they get rest and time off from this work or do they work until they drop dead or are too old where they are then despatched off to be killed. I could not bring myself to go on the rides until I knew the full story. There was also and advertisment regarding an up and coming bullfight. The bull ring is quite small but this kind of thing has to stop in the 21st Century. I loathe any form of animal slavery and then to killed off because it is of no use angers me immensely. I would be most grateful if you could enlighten me. I know the animals in Morocco are treated worse and the irony is that in a religious country where a donkey carried Jesus through the streets that this very animal is one of the most worst treated. So much for religion! Keep up the good work you do and I will keep on supporting you!!! Thank-you.

     me pongo en contacto con vosotros para comunicaros un caso que sucedió el pasado 16 de Mayo. Ocurrió en Cañicosa (Segovia). Observamos a dos yeguas con cadenas y un tronco en medio atadas a sus patas delanteras, impidiendolas el caminar adecuadamente y con heridas en las patas producidas por dichas cadenas (disponemos de fotos). Además se podia ver que no estaban cuidados de ninguna manera, las pezuñas muy largas, … Una vecina nos comentó que era una práctica habitual en el pueblo para que no se escapen, pero en este caso practicamente imposibilitaba dar un paso; dijo que “no se podía hacer nada mas que verlas y sufrir con ellas”, cosa que me pareció una barbaridad por lo que he decidido actuar. He escrito antes a “El refugio” pero no me han dado respuesta, y me han recomendado a traves de “Blasdog” que me comunicara con vosotros.
     Espero vuestra respuesta, porque todavía se me encoge el alma al recordar esas yeguas intentando caminar, y que daba la sensación que entre las cadenas y el cansancio que les supondría dar un paso de esa manera se iban a caer de bruces en cualquier momento.

     I will give some more information about myself: my name is Annemiek, 28 years old and I live in the Netherlands. In 2004 I worked on rancho la Paz (Malaga, Fuengirola) a couple of months, which was really good: working with horses, being in nature, etc. After having completed my study in Economics and having worked for 3 years I decided to follow my heart again. And my heart tells me to go to Spain and work with horses. Spring 2011 I would like to go to Santiago the composetlla.

     I am especially interested in natural horsemanship so that’s why I start my ’sabbatical year’ with a two weeks course at Tracy’s Ranch.

     I would really like to have some more information about the work you do and the possibilities to volunteer. It seems you are doing really good work and I would love to come to your place to volunteer.

     I live up near the Hipodromo in Mijas Costa and there are loose horses wandering around in the road. They are very close to the actual race course, but the security guard is not in the slightest bit interested. They are not horses from their stables, according to him.
     I pass that road several times a day, as does my friend and neighbour, and they are often there. (There were four of them, now we can only see three) The concern is of course that it is dark and they are hard to see and with the racing starting again this Saturday we are both very concerned harm will come to the horses.      EL tiempo que llevo aqui, he observado que hay aqui un hombre que se disfraca de un bandolero y a su yegua tambien.estan situados durante TODO el dia,al SOL, en una plaza,esperandeo gente para que se hagan fotos con el montados en la yegua. La yegua muestra ciertos simptomas de estar deshidratada y enferma, muestra presencia de resfriado por calor muchas veces hasta fiebre. carece de poco peso y caleturas por su disfraz.Los dias que llevo observando a este Hombre, y llego a la conclusion de que al animal bebe agua una vez al dia.Esta siendo expoltada por el dueño dia tras dia. En mi opinion es maltrato fisico al animal.

     The donkeys of Mijas are treated very badly. It is a disgrace for the whole village and anyone with even a least bit of sense in the head avoids paying for donkey rides. Spain is not a civilized country because of cruel treating of animals is clearly seen everywhere.

     Hi, we are a family of 6 and live in Tarifa. I have been looking for a horse for my son and daughter to share for over a year now. We are surrounded by the poorest horses I have ever seen, some incredibly thing, others with infected cuts etc. I keep hoping I will see someone who owns them and ask if I can by one from them - to no avail. I have asked around locally , but no-one wants to sell anything. I cannot understand how these animal owners can not afford to look after their animals properly but will also not pass them on to someone who will. Can you help. We live in the campo, with a paddock and field. We have been in Spain for 18 months now. We owned ponies in the Uk and my older children used to compete in show jumping classes and cross country.

     Hi, I hope you don’t mind giving us some advice. We are an animal charity in Murcia dealing with mostly dog and cat rescue. There is a field near me which has been the home for about a dozen horses for the past 3-4 months, and now 2 foals and one pregnant mare. The field contains no trees or shade of any kind. We think there is water in a small building at the top. Now we are in high summer and in Murcia it is 40 degrees and climbing. I am concerned the horses are there all day without any way to get out of the sun. I have to say other than that, their condition actually looks quite normal.

     The horses are owned by a large Spanish farming family, the general opinion is that to contact them directly would be complete waste of time.

     The law in Murcia prohibits mistreatment of animals or cause them suffering or not to provide them with adequate protection. SEPRONA may be the obvious place to complain.

     But before I do so, I am wondering what is your experience of lodging a complaint with Seprona, would they consider this situation a serious enough case, and would anything actually be done?

     Any advice you can give would be most welcome.

     Hello,
     My name is Elodie Schijvens and live in Locrimar 4, Nueva Andalucia, Malaga. Next door to my apartment is a worn down field full of metal objects and not one bit of shade. Since March this year a pregnant horse has been placed in this field. She is in the sun all day and it is obvious she is suffering from the heat and flies which are biting away on her sores. I have been trying to find its owner for a while but not once have I seen her/him. The horse is getting the occasional bucket of water and carrots from by passers who also notice the animal is thirsty and hungry. The occasional water here and there is keeping it alive however I cannot bare to see the animal suffer like this any longer, especially with the hottest month of August yet to come. I don’t know who to contact and was wonder if you could do something to help. If you don’t specialize in this particular area then could you please put me in touch with someone who does.

     hi near where i live on the road to ojen near julio englais house is a field where there are 10 horses i believe they are from the cork workers they have been there for over 10 days they have rope tied to both their front feet so can only do pigeon steps and are on a rope tied to a tree so they cant hardly walk anywhere and they have no water it is very upsetting to see these horses in the blazing heat without no access to water whenever a car approaches they make a noise , i think it is very cruel please can you help?

     Necesito ayuda,hay tres caballos en el Puerto de Santa Maria(Cadiz)que se mueren de hambre, y yendo para los perales te encuentras caballos con las patas atadas para que no huyan y salgan corriendo,es penoso…se ponen en medio de la carretera y algun dia los atropella un coche,por favor diganme algo,si podeis ayudarlos o no.
     Os mande un correo pero no tengo respuesta,por favor que alguien me diga algo.

     Good afternoon Tony
     It was lovely to meet you again and I do hope your financial problems improve and I´m only sorry that I couldn´t help in a practical way.
     Some time ago I asked if you had any riding horses for loan as I am looking for one. I have a place at a superb yard (I think you have met Chris who owns it) at Cortijo Uribe in Mollina. As you know I am an experienced rider but the horse I bought at 4 yrs old has turned out to be far too strong-willed and stubborn for me and we have regressed back and she is now rearing badly, at my age I can do without this! I hope either to rehome her to a friend who knows her or send her back to her breeder, in either case I lose my money and cannot afford to buy another one.
     I and a friend are also interested in attending the Lucy Rees course in October so perhaps you could let me have more information when available.

     Hola,
     Me ha llamado una amiga que viaja por carretera mucho y no tiene mucho tiempo para hacer denuncias etc.
     Ella ha pasado por la Carretera Malaga - Granada A92M varios veces en las ultimas semanas y en dirección Granada ha visto entre el km 6 y 7 3 caballos atados en un campo sin sombra ni agua visible. Estamos en Agosto y hace muchísimo calor en esa zona y no se hay que llamar al Seprona o si vuestra asociación puede hacer algo o por lo menos mandar a alguien a comprobar la situación de estos 3 caballos. Yo no tengo coche y tengo mi trabajo y mis hijos que atender así que no tengo medios para resolver esto.
     Por favor, ayúdame con esto lo antes posible, o dicerme a quienes debo acvudir.

     Hola, me ha sorprendido lo bien que esta todo organizado, yo colaboro con la protectora de animales de la Linea y la verdad es que no esta tan bien aunque ellos tienen su pagina web y los perros, gatos, caballos, burros… encuentran casa normalmente para Holanda, Alemania… la verdad es que me gustaría trabajar para ustedes, tengo 2 años de experiencia como auxiliar veterinario, además de los 3 años en colaboración con la protectora, y varios meses de monta, cuidado y alimentación de équidos. Si estan interesados puedo mandarles el curriculum, espero pronto una respuesta. Gracias.
     Si se pueden adoptar caballos me gustaría saber como sería.

     My family recently visited the Costa del Sol and we went to the annual Fiesta de Malaga on Wednesday 18th August. Found it very interesting but my wife and I were shocked & very saddened when we went to the amusement park part of hte Fiesta. Apart from the usual rides there were 2 carousels with real live donkeys (instead of the pretend version) - a smaller one and a larger one. The donkeys were going round and round the ride in tight formation (possibly 12 donkeys on the larger carousel), tied up to the ceiling and with little room for movement - they looked miserable and exhausted. The ride mnay have gone on for hours and hours. It was extremely noisy, busy and flashing lights everywhere. This is a world-famous fiesta but we were left disgusted by the treatment of these poor animals. I hope you can look into it so that it is not repeated in future fiestas and that the company operating these rides is not able to continue operating them - a pretend carousel with wooden or plastic horses is perfectly good fun - no need to traumatise real animals.
